Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery π@Lebuh Bishop
Easily recognised by its Instagramable display windows full of Peranakan tingkat (Tiffin Carriers), old plates, even a vintage scooter) Auntie Gail Lean's $$ is one of the oldest Peranakan restaurants in Georgetown. When I arrived there was a table of food bloggers discussing the signature Sharing Platter RM38 - a Peranakan smorgasbord of deep fried spring rolls, Pie Tie and prawn fritters. Feeling full after the excellent oyster omelette at Lebuh Carnavon, I asked a helpful waiter if I could just order the Pie Tie (Top Hat).
No Problem. The Pie Tee was well presented but I found the flavours a bit bland compared to my Mum's old skool version with crab meat, pork slivers and prawns. However the excellent dessert Bee Koh Mui (actually Pulut Hitam in Malay) more than made up for the disappointing Pie Tee. Auntie Gaik Leanβs version of Pulut Hitam (Glutinous rice cooked with santan or coconut milk) is not cloyingly sweet, has a hint of longan and just the right amount of santan.
The interior decor has old skool kopitiam chairs and marble tables, complemented by a feature wall of wallpaper parrots and flowers. I think the floor tiles are original.
My bill was RM36 including a takeout of vermicelli salad. Very reasonable prices.
