Jawi Peranakan cuisine like Nyonya (Chinese Peranakan) is a mixture of Indian Punjabi and Malay culinary cultures. Basically it's a more refined version of Nasi Kandar dishes , also of Indian Muslim origin. The Jawi House Cafe $$ is located at Lebuh Armenian. Decor is old Dutch colonial with wood ceilings. Old photos of the Jawi Peranakan community adorn the walls.
My order of Lamb Briyani (RM35) was beautifully presented. The fluffy grains of Basmati long grain rice were piled high atop of succulent cubes of lamb. Portions are huge, I think. The plate was big enough to feed two. Dessert was sago pudding with Gula Melaka (RM8). No service charge. Water in a carafe was RM1.
Recommend you book a reservation in advance. The place is usually packed. Efficient staff. A friendly chef owner. Delicious heritage food cooked to a high standard. I think Jawi House Cafe rates 5 stars.
