Yeng Keng Hainanese restaurant π@ Chulia Street
The decor of Yeng Keng Hainanese restaurant $$ at Chulia Street is a mix of old Dutch and English Colonial and Chinese Art Deco. Heavy marble topped dark wood sideboards are juxtaposed with banquette seating upholstered in Chinese red brocade and kopitiam tables and chairs.
The menu has the usual Hainanese interpretations of Western cuisine, eg chicken chop smothered with brown sauce $$ as well as Nyonya dishes like Enche Kabin and sago pudding with Gula Melaka. Hailam Mee $$ is also available. This seems to be a Penang invention because I have not seem it elsewhere. The restaurant also has $$$ Hainanese interpretations of the classic English chicken pie. When yours truly was an impoverished student in a UK Redbrick uni in the 70s, chicken pies were one of the cheapest items on the menu of the university reflectory. So I have probably eaten enough chicken pies to know they're made from leftover chicken. Strange to see Yeng Keng Hainanese restaurant selling chicken pies at premium pricesππ€ .
My bill for Hainanese coffee and sago pudding with Gula Melaka was less than RM15.
