Chai Kuih & Yam Cake @Chao Xuan 👍, Lebuh Melayu
Chao Xuan restaurant at Lebuh Melayu (since 1997) serves heritage Teow Chew dumplings called Chai Kuih. These have a variety of vegetables as fillings. Traditional Chai Kuih usually have mengkuang or chives as fillings and are steamed. Chao Xuan also serves Teow Chew porridge with a range of braised dishes such as duck, belly pork and omelettes. My yam cake was average but the serving was huge. The Chai Kuih however was very good, with intense mengkuang flavours and garlic oil.
The interior decor looks DIY with square wood tables and stools. There is a display of potted plants and two stuffed peacocks at the airwell beside an indoor koi pond. With a drink, my tea time order of yam cake and Chai Kuih was RM15.80.
