Rempah Restaurant @ Beach Street

A two year old Nyonya Fusion restaurant that recently reopened after the MCO, Rempah has an upmarket ambience that reminds me of the 1920s Art Deco era. The entrance has a bar with 4 cosy tables where you can sip your cocktails before dinner. The back of house has several tables -just 10 - so dine customers are not seated too closely. Upstairs is a private dining room with a long table that can be booked for birthdays, celebrations and company events

Currently the restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner. Besides the a la Carte menu, Rempah has a 8 course degustation menu for dinner at RM148+. There are plans to offer a High Tea in the future.

Nyonya Fusion food is hard to execute well. I think Kebaya at Seven Terraces sets the standard here. Rempah has a version of Kebaya's deconstructed otak otak but here the fish is encased in a spring roll (instead of puff pastry at Kebaya). The otak otak sauce is served separately.

Portions at Rempah are I think on the small side. My Kerabu salad of pomelo and tiny dried shrimp called gerago was refreshing. But I found the dipping sauce for the prawn fritters was a tad too salty. The Bubur Cha Cha cheesecake though is a knockout winner. Mixed in the cheesecake are bits of yam, banana etc found in Bubur Cha Cha, a Nyonya santan based dessert. 👍. My bill for two appetisers plus the Bubur Cha Cha cheesecake was RM59.40
