Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay @ Jalan Masjid, off Chulia Street

One of the last bastions of authentic Nyonya Kuih in Georgetown, the current Moh Teng Pheow cafe still makes all its Nyonya Kuih by hand in the same heritage premises as it's founder who ran a kuih factory supplying kopitiams in the 1930s. The current generation is the third running the cafe.

I think the old fashioned purple yam kuih and the red Ang Koo Kuih reminds me of the type of kuih my grandmother used to order for her Methodist Prayer Meetings at our home. These were always held at night. After the preacher had finished his sermon, everyone would rush to get the free kuih and coffee. The food was always catered by her friend, a tuck shop canteen operator at the Methodist Girls School across the road from our home. I still remember her famous fried karipap (curry puff stuffed with chicken curry).

Prices at MTP are of course $$ given the artisanal nature of production. The Nyonya version of several kuih like Pulut Inti seems to my taste buds to be less sweet than the Malay version.

My bill for the homemade lemongrass drink and kuih was RM10.60
