Tai Ping Koon @ Stanley Street, Central
Founded in 1860 in Guangzhou, Tai Ping Koon is a Hong Kong institution, serving Western style food. The restaurant chain's signature dishes are roast pigeon, chicken wings in “Swiss” sauce, and smoked pomfret. The “Swiss” sauce is actually “sweet dark soy” sauce but owing to a miscommunication, early printed menus for the dish described it as chicken wings with Swiss sauce.
The interior decor is classic British diner with dark walnut panels. There is a shelf of old newspaper cuttings and plates and saucers from the past. Many of Tai Ping Koon's waiters look like they have there for the past 30-40 years.
My order of a roast pigeon and a set lunch of spaghetti with chicken wings in 'Swiss” sauce with borsch soup and coffee was HKD292.
