Georgetown walkabout- Mano {+} Plus
Another trip to retrieve a registered letter from POS Besar downtown. Had Nasi Lemak at Sri Weld food court, then bought a book by a local author Dayana Wong, “Penang Makan - Heritage Street Food Recipes” at Mano Plus, a lifestyle and arts and crafts shop at Beach Road. There is an inhouse Japanese Cat themed coffee lounge and patisserie that also serves cakes. Prices are $$$ but service is friendly. You can check out their website here.
There is a pop up section selling Japanese canned food from the Mr Kanso brand. Anybody up for canned tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette balls with seafood fillings)? Only RM23.
I think the present trend that is seeing an influx of international class retail outlets at Penang’s Heritage district is encouraging. Compared to Malacca’s cheap souvenir shops that sell mostly Made in China baubles at Jonker Street, I think the Beach Street shops are in a different class.
I also popped into the tourist information shop at Beach Street opposite the Alliance Bank to pick up a free copy of the Penang Monthly magazine. The shop provides information on events and happenings in Penang. It also stocks free maps and brochures on tourist attractions. And there is a nice selection of tasteful tourist souvenirs that range from the usual fridge magnets to more upmarket gift sets that include USB thumb drives and card cases.
