Tanjung Tokong supermarkets#2
Cold Storage at the basement of Island Plaza seems to have been around for decades. It has always been popular with expats because it was one of the few places to get fresh chilled meat from Australia and the US. But the recent opening of Village Grocer - a bigger supermarket chain with an fancy in-house bakery selling pastries and cakes, a Japanese pop up store selling cheap takeaway sushi and bento lunch boxes and a well stocked liquor section across the road at City Junction has affected the footfall at Cold Storage.
Dated displays, old school check-out counters and a limited range of food items seem to suggest Cold Storage is going to struggle to keep up with competition from online grocers and the new kids on the block. But for now Cold Storage’ s fresh meat and seafood section seem to be holding onto its customers. Prices seem competitive.
But there are new players in Tanjung Tokong now. For example the no frills supermarket chain Speedmart 99 recently opened a branch at i-Santorini. Cheaper prices for snacks and other staples like cooking oil, instant noodles, etc by discount supermarkets will probably draw away the price sensitive segment of Cold Storage's customer base.
