Tea tasting@Ten Yee Tea House π
Ten Yee Tea at Beach Street had a tea tasting promotion (RM39) on the premises, held in conjunction with the launch of a Peranakan cook book by Bulan Press. Besides a tea brewing demonstration, there was a short music recital and a book signing by the cookbook author who flew in from Canada.
Founded in 1993, Ten Yee Tea supplies high quality teas to F&B outlets and also sells tea themed gift sets. The interior decor is part tea house and part tea museum. The proprietors have a big collection of antique brass tea containers, purple clay tea pots, tea brewing paraphernalia, and even sculptures of tea connoisseurs enjoying their cuppa of tea.
For the tasting session , three types of tea were brewed and paired with two types of desserts. First a Oolong tea - light yellow and floral - was presented in tall cups so you can enjoy the smell of freshly brewed tea. This was paired with a traditional dessert Muar Chee - a sticky floury concoction coated with crushed peanuts and sugar. Then a dark Dragon Bone tea was brewed to accompany bowls of Bubur Cha Cha, a santan based dessert with stewed sweet potatoes, lotus seeds and barley seeds. Finally a very fine Oolong tea (RM290 for a small packet) was served in tiny cups to cleanse the palate.
The proprietors are tea connoisseurs who take pride in selling the finest teas (with of course matching $$$ prices) . Service is friendly. π
