Wadia 151 PowerDAC amplifier

The Wadia 151 is a compact digital amplifier with only 4 digital inputs (two gold plated coAxial, USB for a computer and a Toslink for TV)) and a set of quality speaker binding posts. At its debut more than ten years ago, the Wadia 151 had a MRP of around US$ 1000. The 151 soon garnered generally good reviews, mainly for the design, high quality of construction and the Wadia cachet. (Wadia was an early manufacturer of DACs)

In a sense, the 151 reminds me of the choice stereotypically presented by electrostatic speakers. Bass is well defined, but not deep or powerful. Midrange is stunningly clear without being edgy. Treble is smooth and accurate without being bright or edgy. Ultimate volume capability is limited, though quite dynamic within it’s volume envelope. The only thing is, electrostatic speakers have traditionally been very expensive—whereas the Wadia 151 really isn’t, at least within the grand sweep of audio pricing.

But the 151 was quickly discounted to as low as US $500 -600 at some online stores. The amplifier is rated at 20W into 8 ohms. Like many hifi equipment it has a remote control that is made of metal.

Post Script

I bought my Wadia 151 three years ago from a Carousell seller for HKD 2800, complete with a box and warranty card. I occasionally use it on my desk connected to a computer and a pair of Audica speakers.
